Informal Read of Screenplay in Cisco

by Ruth York

Cisco Writers Club invites you to a special event Thursday, March 2, 2023. This will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Conrad Hilton Center, 309 Conrad Hilton Blvd., Cisco.

In addition to celebrating Texas Independence and the Club’s 48th anniversary, we’ll hear from Alicia Gibson of Georgetown, Texas. Alicia holds film rights to Elmer Kelton’s classic western, The Time It Never Rained. She’ll share her journey of transforming his award-winning book to screenplay, drawing up production budgets, and searching for just the right producer.

Then the fun begins, as Cisco Writers Club, in conjunction with Cisco College, presents an informal table reading of the screenplay written by Lorie Woodward. This vocal dramatization of a screenplay by a cast of characters often precedes filming.

Kelton was voted “The Greatest Western Writer of All Time.” His The Good Old Boys was Tommy Lee Jones’ directorial debut. The Time It Never Rained, a Spur Award-winning novel, is considered a modern western classic. In it, protagonist Charlie Flagg is a tough, independent, 1950s West Texas rancher facing a seven-year, soul-sapping drought.

NASA astronaut Rick Sturckow reads Kelton’s The Time It Never Rained in space.

In honor of our 48th anniversary, refreshments will be served. Please join us and celebrate Kelton’s classic western as we join Alicia Gibson in sharing its timeless values with new audiences.
