The majority of December has been working multiple thefts and burglaries from around our county and surrounding counties. Most of these thefts/burglaries were at deer leases. Thousands of dollars in property, guns, ammo, and equipment were stolen. All of the office worked tirelessly to help. Multiple search warrants were executed and several interviews were conducted. Throughout this ongoing investigation, we have been able to recover thousands of dollars’ worth of stolen property and are still recovering more. Two suspects were identified, Rode Simmons and Payton Simmons, who are currently in Eastland County Jail for these offenses. I would like to recognize the outstanding work done by the deputies. Not only were they working on this case, but went around to multiple deer camps and sites to check them regularly and to warn the owners. We also had assistance from citizens and other agencies. I am very proud of the established relationships we have to be able to help with this.
The dispatch tower project that I’ve been working on has finally been installed. It was delayed for several months because of all the shipping problems going on nationwide and it took longer than anticipated. These new towers have been installed in Rising Star, Gorman, and Ranger. There have been problems with communications to these areas for several years and this should drastically improve that. The towers are in a testing phase right now. Within the next couple of weeks, I will be going to each police and fire department to help reprogram their radios to access the towers.
The Deputy Ken Maltby Memorial Highway dedication was a great success. There were many that attended including the Maltby family. The signs were erected, and if you haven’t seen them, they are on FM 570 going toward Lake Leon.
December was also full of parades and Christmas parties. We were able to help out with traffic control, cover calls and visit with everyone. It is amazing how well the police departments, fire departments and communities are working with each other. They help us and we help them which is the way it should be. When we are all working together for the common good, it really starts to change the dynamic of the community. I’m proud to be a small part of that.
