Granny Basketball® is coming to Eastland County. What in the world is Granny Basketball?
I’m glad you asked! Basic rules include No Running, No Jumping, No Contact, dribble twice and pass the ball. Play on three sections of the court with 6 players per team. Plus, we wear uniforms designed in the 1920’s.In 2005, Barb Trammel founded Granny Basketball® in Lansing Iowa. What began as a way for “women of a certain age” to exercise, have fun, and raise money for a charity, has exploded into teams all over the USA and even one in Toronto, Canada. There are now more than 600 players on 52 teams including 11 teams in Texas. New teams are continuing to form every year.
SO, that is where we are! We are forming teams in the Eastland County area and we would love for YOU and your friends to join us. Even if you don’t want to play, there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer as a referee, a book keeper or a timekeeper. If you are interested, please contact Roma Holley at myhothands@gmail.com, 254-631-8990 or look for her on Facebook. Roma’s mission statement begins: “My goal in starting a Granny Basketball® team in our area is simple: I want to inspire, support and encourage women to get out of the house, embrace movement and rediscover the joy of play. Through teamwork, fellowship and a love for the game, I want to empower women to stay active, build confidence and create lasting friendships. I believe it is never too late to “get in the game”. So, let’s lace up, have fun and show the world that age is just a number.”
